“Mad Man” Mike Marcum was known for his unconventional and eccentric pursuit of time travel. His story, often discussed in various fringe science and conspiracy theory circles, gained notoriety in the 1990s. Marcum, an amateur scientist, claimed to be working on a device that could facilitate time travel, which he constructed using a range of electrical components including large coils, purportedly similar to those used by Nikola Tesla in his experiments.
Marcum’s interest in time travel and his efforts to build a working time machine captured the attention of both local media and later, broader audiences interested in science and the unexplained. He was featured on radio shows where he discussed his theories and experiments. His approach, while far from conventional scientific methods, was a mix of self-taught electrical engineering and speculative physics.
According to reports, Marcum’s experiments began in his small apartment, where he attempted to create a powerful electromagnetic field using large coils. He claimed that this field could warp time and space, allowing for time travel. His experiments reportedly caused power disruptions in his neighborhood, drawing attention from local authorities and utility companies.
His story took a turn into the realm of the legal when, in 1995, he was incarcerated for stealing transformers from the St. Joseph Light and Power generating station in King City, Missouri. These transformers, he claimed, were essential components for his time-travel device. The theft and subsequent legal consequences, which included 60 days in jail and five years on probation, were confirmed by a report from the Stanberry Police Department.
Despite these setbacks, Marcum’s fascination with time travel persisted. He moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where he continued his experiments in a more lawful manner. Marcum dedicated 18 months to conducting tests with live subjects, namely hamsters and guinea pigs, as part of his time-travel research.
Marcum’s journey and experimental endeavors were detailed in an audio recording from an appearance on “Midnight in the Desert”. In this recording, he described the construction and operation of his time machine and the procedures he used for testing, including sending over 200 objects and animals through the device.
In a particularly dramatic claim, Marcum stated that he himself entered the time machine, resulting in him waking up 800 miles away, two years and two months into the future. He described the experience as disorienting, likening it to being hit with a flashbang, and mentioned suffering from amnesia due to the electromagnetic fields generated by the machine.
Despite these extraordinary claims, Marcum’s current whereabouts and activities remain unclear. As of my last update, he was not listed as a missing person by the Missouri Highway State Patrol.
